    Where the words come from

    Every word here appears both in WordNet, a hand-built lexical database from Princeton, and in the public-domain ENABLE word list. Requiring both means you get dictionary entries with real meanings rather than the inflections, abbrevi- ations and letter strings that pad out raw word lists.

    The bank covers three to twelve letters and holds around 54,000 words. Twelve is the ceiling on purpose: beyond it, almost everything is a compound or an inflected form, which makes for poor random words even though they are perfectly valid.

    Common or obscure, on request

    Difficulty picks which end of the vocabulary you draw from. Easy stays among words with many recorded senses — the PLAY, MAKE, DRAW end of English. Hard reaches into the single-sense tail, where the words are technical, archaic or regional. Medium sits between them.

    For writing prompts and name generation, easy or medium at five to seven letters gives words that carry associations. For vocabulary practice or a harder puzzle, hard is where the interesting entries live, though expect to meet words you will want to look up — which the dictionary check will do.

    Filtering by letter

    The starts-with box takes as many letters as you like, so you can ask for words beginning with S, or narrow to STR. When a prefix has no words inside the chosen difficulty band, the search widens to the whole length rather than returning nothing — asking for easy words starting with X should give you something, even if nothing starting with X is truly common.

    Each batch is drawn without repeats, so a request for twenty words gives twenty different ones. Ask again and you get a fresh draw; there is no seed or history, which means nothing is stored about what you generated.

    Are these actually words?
    Yes. They are drawn from WordNet lemmas that also appear in the public-domain ENABLE list, so every one is a dictionary word rather than a pronounceable string.
    Can I get more obscure words?
    Set the difficulty to hard. Words are ordered by how many senses the dictionary records for them, so hard draws from the tail: single-sense, technical, and archaic entries.
    Why can I not get a 15-letter random word?
    The bank covers three to twelve letters. Beyond twelve, nearly everything is a compound or an inflected form rather than a distinct dictionary entry, which makes for poor random words.
